Linux Migration & Network Services (NAS + DNS)

SYNTIX SYSTEMS LAB — Case Study 02

Context

Unsupported hardware is often discarded despite being operationally viable. This project focused on extending hardware lifecycle while maintaining security and reliability.

Objective

Repurpose legacy hardware into a stable Linux-based network services node.

Implementation

  • Migrated the system from Windows to Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS.
  • Deployed Samba (SMB/CIFS) for file sharing across the local network.
  • Diagnosed and resolved hostname / NetBIOS conflicts through manual configuration beyond GUI-level tooling.
  • Implemented DNS filtering (AdGuard) and firewall rules for defense-in-depth.

Result

A stable NAS + DNS node providing reliable file services, network-level filtering, and predictable behavior under load. This node now functions as a core infrastructure component rather than a disposable device.
